Best Off-Leash Dog Trails Near Halifax, NS

By 4PAWSHFX

Halifax and the surrounding area sit inside one of the most dog-friendly landscapes in Atlantic Canada. Coastal barrens, old-growth forest, and lake-laced wilderness are all within 30 minutes of downtown. After 10+ years of running daily pack walks in this region, here are the spots we return to most.

Purcells Cove Backlands

The Backlands are the gold standard for off-leash walking near Halifax. Hundreds of hectares of protected wilderness with marked and unmarked trails, granite outcrops, and freshwater lakes. Dogs can swim, run, and explore without the crowds you find at more popular parks.

Best for: confident, social dogs who are solid on recall.

Parking: Purcells Cove Road, near the Frog Pond trailhead.

Williams Lake Conservation Area

A short drive from downtown, Williams Lake offers a mix of forested trails and open lakeside terrain. The lake itself is a favourite for dogs who love to swim. Trails range from easy to moderate, and the area is large enough that you rarely feel crowded.

Best for: all fitness levels. Great for dogs who are still building trail confidence.

Parking: Williams Lake Road off Purcells Cove Road.

Sambro Creek Trails

The Sambro area — where 4PAWSHFX is based — has some of the most rugged and rewarding terrain in the region. Coastal barrens, bogs, and rocky headlands. This is where our pack walks happen most often. The landscape is demanding and the smells are extraordinary for dogs.

Best for: high-energy dogs and experienced walkers.

Note: trails here are informal. A GPS track or local knowledge helps.

Blue Mountain–Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area

One of the largest protected wilderness areas in any Canadian city. Dozens of kilometres of trails through boreal forest, past lakes, and over granite ridges. The terrain is varied and the wildlife sightings are common — deer, fox, and the occasional moose.

Best for: longer adventures. Plan for 2+ hours.

Parking: multiple access points off Hammonds Plains Road.

Dollar Lake Provincial Park

About 45 minutes from Halifax, Dollar Lake is worth the drive for the swimming alone. A large sandy beach area where dogs can run and splash. The surrounding trails are quieter than the city parks and the lake is clean and cold.

Best for: summer days when your dog needs a real swim.

A note on recall

Every trail on this list is off-leash territory — but off-leash only works if your dog comes back when called. If recall is still a work in progress, keep your dog on a long line until the cue is solid. Our Recall training guide covers the step-by-step process from charging the cue to proofing in the field.

If you want your dog to experience these trails as part of a balanced pack, our daily pack walks run Monday to Friday with pick-up and drop-off in the Halifax area.
